With reference to your letter No. 27 of 14th. May and to previous correspondence, I have the honour to inform you that the following information has been furnished by the General Managers of the Green Island Cement Company:-

(a). A Canton newspaper of 27th. July re-published the notifi- -cation of 26th. April which was referred to in my letter No. 25

of lsp. May.

(b). That one of the partners of the firm, with whom the Green Island Cement Company have a contract for supply of stone from Yin Tak on the North River, has been arrested and imprisoned in Canton on the charge of having lately been cutting stone at his

contrary quarry to the Regulations of the Board of Industry, that an employe of the firm of Yuen On has similarly been arrested and that another partner of the firm who is now in Hongkong is afraid to return to Canton as he has heard that he also will be arrested. The allegation being that they have not baken out permits to quarry the stone at Yin Tak.

(c). That on Saturday 27th. July the asters of four Junks loaded with stone in Canton en route for Hongkong were arrested on a charge of being engaged in the illicit busines of carrying stone

which for which no permit had been granted and that some junks, had started to go up West River to load stone have been told that they will be arrested if they proceed and have therefore returned to

Canton and business is at standstill.

a

2. I understand that the Contractors have applied

for the necessary per.it, but are unable to obtain it, the Government stating that before a permit can be granted they must look into the ownership of the quarry. This excuse is evidently a

subterfuge as the firm have had the title deeds for many years.
